چکیده

Porous media flow models are applied in important areas of interest, including environmental studies or industrial applications. In this case, large-scale experiments are usually expensive, or even impossible, so computer simulations should replace them. Here we focus on the numerical simulation of a flow in an unsaturated, heterogeneous soil. We summarize briefly some results concerning the modeling aspects and describe a numerical approach for solving these kinds of problems. Simulation results are presented at the end of the paper.

Flow in unsaturated random porous media, nonlinear numerical analysis and comparison to analytical stochastic models

This work presents a rigorous numerical validation of analytical stochastic models of steady state unsaturated flow in heterogeneous porous media. It also provides a crucial link between stochastic theory based on simplifying assumptions and empirical field and simulation evidence of variably saturated flow in actual or realistic hypothetical heterogeneous porous media. Statistical properties o...

An Efficient Method for Simulating Steady Unsaturated Flow in Random Porous Media: Using an Analytical Perturbation Solution as Initial Guess to a Numerical Model

Numerical simulation of flow through multidimensional heterogeneous soils under unsaturated conditions is a computationally intensive task. The governing unsaturated flow equation is nonlinear. The degree of nonlinearity depends on the unsaturated hydraulic properties of the soil and the degree of heterogeneity. In this paper, we present a highly efficient method to simulate unsaturated steady ...

Analytical solutions to steady state unsaturated flow in layered, randomly heterogeneous soils via Kirchhoff transformation

In this study, we derive analytical solutions of the first two moments (mean and variance) of pressure head for one-dimensional steady state unsaturated flow in a randomly heterogeneous layered soil column under random boundary conditions. We first linearize the steady state unsaturated flow equations by Kirchhoff transformation and solve the moments of the transformed variable up to second ord...

Explicit analytical solutions for one-dimensional steady state flow in layered, heterogeneous unsaturated soils under random boundary conditions

[1] In this study, we directly derive first-order analytical solutions to the pressure head moments (mean and variance) for one-dimensional steady state unsaturated flow in randomly heterogeneous layered soil columns under various random boundary conditions. We assume that the constitutive relation between the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and the pressure head follows an exponential model...

Comparison of Finite Difference Schemes for Water Flow in Unsaturated Soils

Flow movement in unsaturated soil can be expressed by a partial differential equation, named Richards equation. The objective of this study is the finding of an appropriate implicit numerical solution for head based Richards equation. Some of the well known finite difference schemes (fully implicit, Crank Nicolson and Runge-Kutta) have been utilized in this study. In addition, the effects of di...
